Home work for the week of 5/3 to 5/7
Mon: Bio rb p180-186 1-20 on p. 187 Chem: rb p225 6-9 p. 233 33,34,36
Wed: wkst of choice, see me
Fri: TB WTR p.534-543 Ecology Chem: wtr p.384-390 acid bases

Lecture notes
Biology watched HHMI videos on genetics and microbes and took a test.

Chemistry Worked on redox review and conservation of charge with respect to 1/2 reaction.
Ex: Mn +4 + 2 e- = Mn 2+
We did extensive redox review on Thursday and ALL CLASSES took a test on FRIDAY...

4/26 notes: M. Oberkircher we hope you are enjoying South America: STUDY redox
Bio: Mutagenic agents: radiation, cosmic rays, chemicals can cause changes to genetic makup of an organism which can result in diversity. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative

Chemistry: Conservation of charge within a reaction ex Li = Li+ + 1 e-
NOT: Li + 1e- = Li+ treat the eqn as a math statement.

redox equations contain a reducing agent and an oxidizing agent

What ever is reduced is the oxidizing agent
What ever is oxidized is the reducing agent

Determine this in the following :
Li + Na+ = Li+ + Na

Reduced=Na+ is also the oxidizing agent
Oxidized= Li is also the reducing agent

Week of 4/26
Homework:
Biology RB p63 1-14 Chemistry RB p.220-225 do p.222 1-5 p.208

Chemistry Notes
April 20
We reviewed redox and worked on a redox wkst 1
reviewed oxidation numbers, writing 1/2 reactions
determined who was reduced or oxidized.

Homework
week of 4/19
Monday:bio rb p56-58 chem rb p207 16-22 p222 4,5
Wednesday: worksheet in each class: see White
Friday: Bio TB WTR : p368-392 and 398-408 Mendel Chem TB WTR: p419-430

Monday 4/19
Biology notes on Transcription and Translation, mRNA copies code (3 letters=codon) goes to ribosome where translation takes place with the help of tRNA. this is where amino acids are joined to make a protein.

Congratulations to color guard on a great showing: Extra Credit if you check this while out in California... and tell me when you get back. Have Fun

4/6 Notes:

Biology
Chromosomal mutations: deletions, tangling, flipping, breakage; these occur when?? most during meiosis. We began molecular genetics with replication of DNA which is selfconserving: a little old and a little new.

Chemistry

completed organic chem with a review, began redox with a defininition of what redox is
Reduction gain electrons, oxidation number decreases as you gain electrons. Think about this!
Oxidation lose electrons, oxidation number increases.
NOT all reactions are redox, only reactions where electrons are gained and lost by species within the reaction.

Biology 4/5
Notes on How to determine blood types A and B are co dominant, We used I's to develop punnet square, see page 422 of text book for more information
Environmental effects on gene expression: see page 407 of text book for more detail.

Chem notes;
Organic reactions: Saponification: soap making: has both hydrophyllic and hydrophobic ends
And many monomers make a polymer: organic examples; starch, proteins, Dna Inorganic examples: plastics

HOMEWORK FOR THE NEXT WEEK STARTING 4/5

4/5 BIO RB P 125 74-86 CHEM RB P 200 5-15

4/7 ALL CLASSES STUDY FOR TEST ON 4/8

HAVE A GREAT BREAK

BIOLOGY.... WORK ON YOUR GENETICS PROJECT DUE ON 4/30
FIELD TRIP FORMS ARE DUE FOR THE 4/22 TRIP TO BIO FIELD STATION

April 2 2004
Biology notes
Morgan discoverers genes exist in chromsomes
studies fruit flys
finds that they have 3 autosomes and 1 pair sex chromosomes
finds that more males are white eyed than females
proposes sex linkage of some traits
Which chromosome carries sex linked traits such as hemophilia, color blindness or cystic fibrosis???
The X chromosome does... Males are the affected ones.

BIO NOTES:
CHROMOSOME THEORY OF INHERITANCE: SUTTON: CHROMOSOMES ARE WHERE TRAITS ARE FOUND

GENE THEORY OF INHERITANCE: MORGAN AND HIS FRIUIT FLIES..CHROMOSOMES ARE MADE UP OF GENES. GENES ARE THE TRAITS
